I think the Celine passage doesn't sound degenerate, only miserable and hateful.

Maybe we have different definitions of degeneracy. All I saw in that quote was a total lack of patriotism, no romantic feeling for his lover, no love for his fellow man, and a slavishness that all only wanted to live on no matter who the master was. Pretty degenerate by my standards — and you should see his feelings on war virtues!
